91. Ash-Shams (الشمس)
بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمـٰنِ الرَّحيمِ
Verse 1
وَالشَّمسِ وَضُحىٰها
Translation
By the sun and its brightness,

وَالقَمَرِ إِذا تَلىٰها

and by the moon as it follows it[1],

فَأَلهَمَها فُجورَها وَتَقوىٰها
Translation
then inspired it [to know] its wickedness and righteousness,

قَد أَفلَحَ مَن زَكّىٰها
Translation
Indeed, he who purifies his soul will attain success,

and he who corrupts it will be doomed.

كَذَّبَت ثَمودُ بِطَغوىٰها
Translation
Thamūd rejected [the messenger] because of their transgression,

إِذِ انبَعَثَ أَشقىٰها
Translation
when the most wretched among them rose[1].

فَقالَ لَهُم رَسولُ اللَّهِ ناقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقيـٰها
Translation
Although the messenger of Allah warned them, “Hands off the she-camel of Allah and her drink!”

فَكَذَّبوهُ فَعَقَروها فَدَمدَمَ عَلَيهِم رَبُّهُم بِذَنبِهِم فَسَوّىٰها
Translation
Yet they rejected him and hamstrung her[1]. So their Lord destroyed them for their sin and leveled them to the ground.

وَلا يَخافُ عُقبـٰها
