89. Al-Fajr (الفجر)
بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمـٰنِ الرَّحيمِ
Verse 1
وَالفَجرِ

By the dawn,

are these oaths not sufficient for those who have sense?

أَلَم تَرَ كَيفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعادٍ
Translation
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ‘Ād

إِرَمَ ذاتِ العِمادِ
Translation
of Iram[1], who were people of great stature,

Verse 8
الَّتى لَم يُخلَق مِثلُها فِى البِلـٰدِ
Translation
the like of whom had never been created in the land;

وَثَمودَ الَّذينَ جابُوا الصَّخرَ بِالوادِ
Translation
and Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the Valley;

وَفِرعَونَ ذِى الأَوتادِ
Translation
and the mighty and powerful[1] Pharaoh?

الَّذينَ طَغَوا فِى البِلـٰدِ
Translation
All of them transgressed in the land,

فَأَكثَروا فيهَا الفَسادَ

and spread therein much corruption,

فَصَبَّ عَلَيهِم رَبُّكَ سَوطَ عَذابٍ
Translation
so your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالمِرصادِ
Translation
Indeed, your Lord is ever vigilant.

فَأَمَّا الإِنسـٰنُ إِذا مَا ابتَلىٰهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقولُ رَبّى أَكرَمَنِ
Translation
As for man, when he is tested by his Lord by honoring him and bestowing blessings upon him, he says, “My Lord has [deservedly] honored me[1]!”

Verse 16
وَأَمّا إِذا مَا ابتَلىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيهِ رِزقَهُ فَيَقولُ رَبّى أَهـٰنَنِ
Translation
But when he is tested by restricting his provision, he says, “My Lord has [undeservedly] humiliated me!”

كَلّا ۖ بَل لا تُكرِمونَ اليَتيمَ
Translation
No indeed[1]! You are not kind to the orphan,

وَلا تَحـٰضّونَ عَلىٰ طَعامِ المِسكينِ
Translation
nor do you urge one another to feed the needy,

وَتَأكُلونَ التُّراثَ أَكلًا لَمًّا
Translation
and you greedily consume the entire inheritance[1],

and love wealth immensely.

كَلّا إِذا دُكَّتِ الأَرضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا
Translation
No indeed! When the earth is crushed over and over,

وَجاءَ رَبُّكَ وَالمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا
Translation
and your Lord comes[1] with the angels, rank after rank,

وَجِا۟ىءَ يَومَئِذٍ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَومَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ الإِنسـٰنُ وَأَنّىٰ لَهُ الذِّكرىٰ
Translation
and Hell is brought near on that Day – this is when man will understand, but what is the use of that understanding?

يَقولُ يـٰلَيتَنى قَدَّمتُ لِحَياتى
Translation
He will say, “Would that I had sent forth something for my [eternal] life!”

فَيَومَئِذٍ لا يُعَذِّبُ عَذابَهُ أَحَدٌ
Translation
None can punish as He punishes on that Day,

وَلا يوثِقُ وَثاقَهُ أَحَدٌ
Translation
and none can bind as He binds.

يـٰأَيَّتُهَا النَّفسُ المُطمَئِنَّةُ
Translation
[It will be said to the believer,] “O tranquil soul!

ارجِعى إِلىٰ رَبِّكِ راضِيَةً مَرضِيَّةً
Translation
Return to your Lord, well pleased and pleasing [to Him].

فَادخُلى فى عِبـٰدى
Translation
Join My [righteous] slaves,

وَادخُلى جَنَّتى
