83. Al-Mutaffifin (المطففين)

بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمـٰنِ الرَّحيمِ
Verse 1
وَيلٌ لِلمُطَفِّفينَ
Translation
Woe to the defrauders[1],

[1] i.e., those who cheat people by giving them less in sale transactions, an amount so little as to hardly be noticed.

الَّذينَ إِذَا اكتالوا عَلَى النّاسِ يَستَوفونَ
Translation
those who take full measure when they take from others,

وَإِذا كالوهُم أَو وَزَنوهُم يُخسِرونَ
Translation
but they give less when they measure or weigh for them.

أَلا يَظُنُّ أُولـٰئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَبعوثونَ
Translation
Do they really not think that they will be resurrected

لِيَومٍ عَظيمٍ
Translation
for a momentous Day,

يَومَ يَقومُ النّاسُ لِرَبِّ العـٰلَمينَ
Translation
a Day when people will stand before the Lord of the worlds?

كَلّا إِنَّ كِتـٰبَ الفُجّارِ لَفى سِجّينٍ
Translation
No indeed! The record of the wicked is surely in Sijjīn.

وَما أَدرىٰكَ ما سِجّينٌ
Translation
How do you know what Sijjīn is?

كِتـٰبٌ مَرقومٌ
Translation
It is a clearly inscribed Record.

وَيلٌ يَومَئِذٍ لِلمُكَذِّبينَ
Translation
Woe on that Day to the deniers,

الَّذينَ يُكَذِّبونَ بِيَومِ الدّينِ
Translation
those who deny the Judgment Day!

وَما يُكَذِّبُ بِهِ إِلّا كُلُّ مُعتَدٍ أَثيمٍ
Translation
None denies it except every sinful transgressor.

إِذا تُتلىٰ عَلَيهِ ءايـٰتُنا قالَ أَسـٰطيرُ الأَوَّلينَ
Translation
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, “Ancient fables[1]!”

Verse 14
كَلّا ۖ بَل ۜ رانَ عَلىٰ قُلوبِهِم ما كانوا يَكسِبونَ
Translation
No indeed! Their hearts have been stained by what they used to commit[1]!

كَلّا إِنَّهُم عَن رَبِّهِم يَومَئِذٍ لَمَحجوبونَ
Translation
No indeed! On that Day they will be barred from seeing their Lord[1].

Verse 16
ثُمَّ إِنَّهُم لَصالُوا الجَحيمِ
Translation
They will then surely enter the Blazing Fire,

ثُمَّ يُقالُ هـٰذَا الَّذى كُنتُم بِهِ تُكَذِّبونَ
Translation
then they will be told, “This is what you used to deny.”

كَلّا إِنَّ كِتـٰبَ الأَبرارِ لَفى عِلِّيّينَ
Translation
No indeed! The record of the righteous is certainly in ‘illiyyīn –

وَما أَدرىٰكَ ما عِلِّيّونَ
Translation
and how do you know what ‘illiyyūn is? –

كِتـٰبٌ مَرقومٌ
Translation
It is a record inscribed,

يَشهَدُهُ المُقَرَّبونَ
Translation
witnessed by those who are close to Allah.

إِنَّ الأَبرارَ لَفى نَعيمٍ
Translation
Indeed, the righteous will be in Bliss,

Verse 23
عَلَى الأَرائِكِ يَنظُرونَ
Translation
seated on couches, gazing in wonder.

تَعرِفُ فى وُجوهِهِم نَضرَةَ النَّعيمِ
Translation
You will see on their faces the radiance of bliss.

يُسقَونَ مِن رَحيقٍ مَختومٍ
Translation
They will be served to drink pure wine from a sealed container,

خِتـٰمُهُ مِسكٌ ۚ وَفى ذٰلِكَ فَليَتَنافَسِ المُتَنـٰفِسونَ
Translation
whose last sip is musk[1] – so let the competitors compete for that –

وَمِزاجُهُ مِن تَسنيمٍ
Translation
and it will be mixed with water from the spring of Tasnīm[1],

عَينًا يَشرَبُ بِهَا المُقَرَّبونَ
Translation
a spring from which those who are close to Allah will drink.

إِنَّ الَّذينَ أَجرَموا كانوا مِنَ الَّذينَ ءامَنوا يَضحَكونَ
Translation
Indeed, the wicked used to laugh at the believers;

Verse 30
وَإِذا مَرّوا بِهِم يَتَغامَزونَ
Translation
when they passed by them, they would wink at one another,

وَإِذَا انقَلَبوا إِلىٰ أَهلِهِمُ انقَلَبوا فَكِهينَ
Translation
and when they went back to their people, they would return exulting.

وَإِذا رَأَوهُم قالوا إِنَّ هـٰؤُلاءِ لَضالّونَ
Translation
When they saw the believers, they would say, “These people are truly misguided,”

وَما أُرسِلوا عَلَيهِم حـٰفِظينَ
Translation
although they were not sent as their keepers.

فَاليَومَ الَّذينَ ءامَنوا مِنَ الكُفّارِ يَضحَكونَ
Translation
So Today[1] the believers will laugh at the disbelievers,

Translation
while sitting on couches, gazing around.

Translation
Have the disbelievers been rewarded except for what they used to do?
