70. Al-Ma'arij (المعارج)

بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمـٰنِ الرَّحيمِ
Verse 1
سَأَلَ سائِلٌ بِعَذابٍ واقِعٍ
Translation
A challenger asked for a punishment bound to come[1]

[1] In the Hereafter. The pagans of Makkah had challenged the Prophet (ﷺ) in ridicule by asking Allah to bring upon them His punishment. See 8:32.

لِلكـٰفِرينَ لَيسَ لَهُ دافِعٌ
Translation
upon the disbelievers, which none can avert,

مِنَ اللَّهِ ذِى المَعارِجِ
Translation
from Allah, Lord of the pathways of ascent,

Verse 4
تَعرُجُ المَلـٰئِكَةُ وَالرّوحُ إِلَيهِ فى يَومٍ كانَ مِقدارُهُ خَمسينَ أَلفَ سَنَةٍ
Translation
by which the angels and the Spirit[1] will ascend to Him on a Day[2] the length of which is fifty thousand years.

فَاصبِر صَبرًا جَميلًا
Translation
So be patient [O Prophet] with beautiful patience.

إِنَّهُم يَرَونَهُ بَعيدًا
Translation
Indeed, they see this [punishment] far off,

وَنَرىٰهُ قَريبًا
Translation
but We see it to be close at hand.

Verse 8
يَومَ تَكونُ السَّماءُ كَالمُهلِ
Translation
On the Day when the sky will be like molten brass[1]

وَتَكونُ الجِبالُ كَالعِهنِ
Translation
and the mountains will be like dyed wool[1],

وَلا يَسـَٔلُ حَميمٌ حَميمًا
Translation
and no close friend will ask about another,

Verse 11
يُبَصَّرونَهُم ۚ يَوَدُّ المُجرِمُ لَو يَفتَدى مِن عَذابِ يَومِئِذٍ بِبَنيهِ
Translation
even though they will see one another. The wicked will wish he could ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by offering his children,

Verse 12
وَصـٰحِبَتِهِ وَأَخيهِ
Translation
and his wife and his brother,

وَفَصيلَتِهِ الَّتى تُـٔويهِ
Translation
and his kindred who stood by him,

وَمَن فِى الأَرضِ جَميعًا ثُمَّ يُنجيهِ
Translation
and everyone on earth, just to save himself.

كَلّا ۖ إِنَّها لَظىٰ
Translation
By no means![1] It is a raging Flame,

نَزّاعَةً لِلشَّوىٰ
Translation
that will strip off the scalps[1].

[1] Referring to the skin of the head or of the body extremities, which will be burned away by severe heat and flames.

Verse 17
تَدعوا مَن أَدبَرَ وَتَوَلّىٰ
Translation
It will call everyone who turned their backs and disobeyed,

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوعىٰ
Translation
and amassed and hoarded wealth.

إِنَّ الإِنسـٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلوعًا
Translation
Indeed, man was created impatient:

إِذا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزوعًا
Translation
when evil befalls him, he bewails,

وَإِذا مَسَّهُ الخَيرُ مَنوعًا
Translation
but when good fortune comes his way, he becomes tight-fisted –

إِلَّا المُصَلّينَ
Translation
except those who pray,

Verse 23
الَّذينَ هُم عَلىٰ صَلاتِهِم دائِمونَ
Translation
who are steadfast in their prayers;

وَالَّذينَ فى أَموٰلِهِم حَقٌّ مَعلومٌ
Translation
and who give a due share[1] of their wealth

Verse 25
لِلسّائِلِ وَالمَحرومِ
Translation
to the beggar and the dispossessed;

وَالَّذينَ يُصَدِّقونَ بِيَومِ الدّينِ
Translation
and who firmly believe in the Day of Judgment;

وَالَّذينَ هُم مِن عَذابِ رَبِّهِم مُشفِقونَ
Translation
and those who fear the punishment of their Lord –

إِنَّ عَذابَ رَبِّهِم غَيرُ مَأمونٍ
Translation
for none can feel secure from their Lord’s punishment –

Verse 29
وَالَّذينَ هُم لِفُروجِهِم حـٰفِظونَ
Translation
and those who guard their private parts[1],

[1] i.e., their chastity and honor from immoralities.

Verse 30
إِلّا عَلىٰ أَزوٰجِهِم أَو ما مَلَكَت أَيمـٰنُهُم فَإِنَّهُم غَيرُ مَلومينَ
Translation
except from their wives or bondwomen[1] whom they own, for then they are not to be blamed.

Verse 31
فَمَنِ ابتَغىٰ وَراءَ ذٰلِكَ فَأُولـٰئِكَ هُمُ العادونَ
Translation
But whoever seeks beyond that, it is they who are the transgressors.

وَالَّذينَ هُم لِأَمـٰنـٰتِهِم وَعَهدِهِم رٰعونَ
Translation
and those who fulfill their trusts and pledges;

وَالَّذينَ هُم بِشَهـٰدٰتِهِم قائِمونَ
Translation
and who are upright in their testimonies;

Verse 34
وَالَّذينَ هُم عَلىٰ صَلاتِهِم يُحافِظونَ
Translation
and who take due care of their prayers;

Verse 35
أُولـٰئِكَ فى جَنّـٰتٍ مُكرَمونَ
Translation
they will be honored in gardens[1].

فَمالِ الَّذينَ كَفَروا قِبَلَكَ مُهطِعينَ
Translation
What is the matter with the disbelievers that they are rushing towards you [O Prophet][1],

Verse 37
عَنِ اليَمينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمالِ عِزينَ
Translation
from the right and from the left, in crowds[1]?

[1] Some pagans of Makkah gathered around the Prophet (ﷺ) mocking and opposing him, claiming that if there is in fact a Hereafter, they would enter Paradise before the believers.

Verse 38
أَيَطمَعُ كُلُّ امرِئٍ مِنهُم أَن يُدخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعيمٍ
Translation
Does everyone of them aspire to enter a garden of bliss?

Verse 39
كَلّا ۖ إِنّا خَلَقنـٰهُم مِمّا يَعلَمونَ
Translation
By no means! We have created them from what they know[1].

Verse 40
فَلا أُقسِمُ بِرَبِّ المَشـٰرِقِ وَالمَغـٰرِبِ إِنّا لَقـٰدِرونَ
Translation
I swear by the Lord of the sunrises and sunsets[1] that We are surely Capable

[1] i.e., Allah is the One Who determines the daily points of sunrise and sunset according to each season by the rotation of the earth around the sun.

عَلىٰ أَن نُبَدِّلَ خَيرًا مِنهُم وَما نَحنُ بِمَسبوقينَ
Translation
to replace them with others better than them, and none can escape Our decree.

فَذَرهُم يَخوضوا وَيَلعَبوا حَتّىٰ يُلـٰقوا يَومَهُمُ الَّذى يوعَدونَ
Translation
So leave them to engage in their falsehood and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised;

Verse 43
يَومَ يَخرُجونَ مِنَ الأَجداثِ سِراعًا كَأَنَّهُم إِلىٰ نُصُبٍ يوفِضونَ
Translation
the Day when they will rush out of their graves as if they are racing towards an idol[1],

[1] i.e., just as they used to race towards a newly appointed idol, to be among the first of its worshipers.

Verse 44
خـٰشِعَةً أَبصـٰرُهُم تَرهَقُهُم ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذٰلِكَ اليَومُ الَّذى كانوا يوعَدونَ
Translation
with their eyes downcast and overwhelmed with disgrace. That is the Day that they were promised.
