44. Ad-Dukhan (الدخان)

بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمـٰنِ الرَّحيمِ

وَالكِتـٰبِ المُبينِ
Translation
By the clear Book.

إِنّا أَنزَلنـٰهُ فى لَيلَةٍ مُبـٰرَكَةٍ ۚ إِنّا كُنّا مُنذِرينَ
Translation
Indeed, We sent it[1] down on a blessed night. We have always sent warners.

[1] The revelation of the Qur’an started on the Night of Decree (al-Qadr) in the month of Ramadān, the 9th month of the lunar calendar. The Night of Decree is better than one thousand months. See (97:1-3 and 2:185).

Verse 4
فيها يُفرَقُ كُلُّ أَمرٍ حَكيمٍ
Translation
On that night, every matter of wisdom is determined[1]

Verse 5
أَمرًا مِن عِندِنا ۚ إِنّا كُنّا مُرسِلينَ
Translation
by Our command. We have always sent messengers.

رَحمَةً مِن رَبِّكَ ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّميعُ العَليمُ
Translation
as a mercy from your Lord. He is indeed the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing,

Verse 7
رَبِّ السَّمـٰوٰتِ وَالأَرضِ وَما بَينَهُما ۖ إِن كُنتُم موقِنينَ
Translation
Lord of the heavens and earth and all that is between them, if only you had sure faith.

Verse 8
لا إِلـٰهَ إِلّا هُوَ يُحيۦ وَيُميتُ ۖ رَبُّكُم وَرَبُّ ءابائِكُمُ الأَوَّلينَ
Translation
None has the right to be worshiped except Him, Who gives life and causes death – your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers.

Verse 9
بَل هُم فى شَكٍّ يَلعَبونَ
Translation
But they are in doubt, amusing themselves.

فَارتَقِب يَومَ تَأتِى السَّماءُ بِدُخانٍ مُبينٍ
Translation
So wait for a day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke[1],

[1] Referring to the drought that affected the pagans of Makkah severely, so they came to the Prophet (ﷺ), begging him to supplicate Allah to remove the affliction from them.

Verse 11
يَغشَى النّاسَ ۖ هـٰذا عَذابٌ أَليمٌ
Translation
that will overwhelm the people. This is a painful punishment!

رَبَّنَا اكشِف عَنَّا العَذابَ إِنّا مُؤمِنونَ
Translation
[They will cry,] “Our Lord, remove the punishment from us; we will surely believe!”

Verse 13
أَنّىٰ لَهُمُ الذِّكرىٰ وَقَد جاءَهُم رَسولٌ مُبينٌ
Translation
How will they take heed, when a messenger who explained things clearly has already come to them?

Verse 14
ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوا عَنهُ وَقالوا مُعَلَّمٌ مَجنونٌ
Translation
Then they turned away from him and said, “[He is] a madman, taught by others.”

Verse 15
إِنّا كاشِفُوا العَذابِ قَليلًا ۚ إِنَّكُم عائِدونَ
Translation
We shall hold the punishment back for a while, but you will surely return [to disbelief].

Verse 16
يَومَ نَبطِشُ البَطشَةَ الكُبرىٰ إِنّا مُنتَقِمونَ
Translation
On the Day when We seize [them] with the greatest assault, We will surely exact retribution.

Verse 17
وَلَقَد فَتَنّا قَبلَهُم قَومَ فِرعَونَ وَجاءَهُم رَسولٌ كَريمٌ
Translation
Indeed, We tested the people of Pharaoh before them, when a noble messenger came to them,

أَن أَدّوا إِلَىَّ عِبادَ اللَّهِ ۖ إِنّى لَكُم رَسولٌ أَمينٌ
Translation
[saying], “Hand over to me the slaves of Allah[1]. I am indeed a trustworthy messenger to you,

Verse 19
وَأَن لا تَعلوا عَلَى اللَّهِ ۖ إِنّى ءاتيكُم بِسُلطـٰنٍ مُبينٍ
Translation
and do not be arrogant towards Allah. I have certainly come to you with clear proof.

Verse 20
وَإِنّى عُذتُ بِرَبّى وَرَبِّكُم أَن تَرجُمونِ
Translation
And I certainly seek refuge with my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me to death[1].

Verse 21
وَإِن لَم تُؤمِنوا لى فَاعتَزِلونِ
Translation
If you do not believe me, then leave me alone.”

فَدَعا رَبَّهُ أَنَّ هـٰؤُلاءِ قَومٌ مُجرِمونَ
Translation
Then he called upon his Lord, “These are wicked people”.

فَأَسرِ بِعِبادى لَيلًا إِنَّكُم مُتَّبَعونَ
Translation
[Allah said], “Leave along with My slaves by night; you will surely be pursued.

Verse 24
وَاترُكِ البَحرَ رَهوًا ۖ إِنَّهُم جُندٌ مُغرَقونَ
Translation
And leave the sea parted[1]; for they are surely an army destined to drown.”

كَم تَرَكوا مِن جَنّـٰتٍ وَعُيونٍ
Translation
[Imagine] how many gardens and springs they left behind,

وَزُروعٍ وَمَقامٍ كَريمٍ
Translation
and crops and splendid mansions,

وَنَعمَةٍ كانوا فيها فـٰكِهينَ
Translation
and luxuries they used to rejoice therein.

كَذٰلِكَ ۖ وَأَورَثنـٰها قَومًا ءاخَرينَ
Translation
So it was; and We made another people inherit all that.

Verse 29
فَما بَكَت عَلَيهِمُ السَّماءُ وَالأَرضُ وَما كانوا مُنظَرينَ
Translation
Neither the heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they given any respite.

Verse 30
وَلَقَد نَجَّينا بَنى إِسرٰءيلَ مِنَ العَذابِ المُهينِ
Translation
Thus did We save the Children of Israel from the humiliating punishment,

مِن فِرعَونَ ۚ إِنَّهُ كانَ عالِيًا مِنَ المُسرِفينَ
Translation
from Pharaoh. He was indeed arrogant who transgressed all bounds.

Verse 32
وَلَقَدِ اختَرنـٰهُم عَلىٰ عِلمٍ عَلَى العـٰلَمينَ
Translation
We chose them[1] knowingly over all other peoples.

Verse 33
وَءاتَينـٰهُم مِنَ الـٔايـٰتِ ما فيهِ بَلـٰؤٌا۟ مُبينٌ
Translation
And We gave them signs in which there was a clear test.

Verse 34
إِنَّ هـٰؤُلاءِ لَيَقولونَ
Translation
Indeed, these [Makkans] say,

إِن هِىَ إِلّا مَوتَتُنَا الأولىٰ وَما نَحنُ بِمُنشَرينَ
Translation
“There is nothing after our first death, and we will not be resurrected,

Verse 36
فَأتوا بِـٔابائِنا إِن كُنتُم صـٰدِقينَ
Translation
then bring back our forefathers if you are truthful.”

Verse 37
أَهُم خَيرٌ أَم قَومُ تُبَّعٍ وَالَّذينَ مِن قَبلِهِم ۚ أَهلَكنـٰهُم ۖ إِنَّهُم كانوا مُجرِمينَ
Translation
Are they better [in power] or the people of Tubba‘[1] and those who were before them? We destroyed them, for they were truly wicked[2].

[1] i.e., the people of Sheba. [2] Tubba’ al-Himyari was a righteous Yemeni king of ancient times whose people persisted in disbelief and were destroyed; nonetheless, they were more powerful and superior to the pagans of Makkah.

Verse 38
وَما خَلَقنَا السَّمـٰوٰتِ وَالأَرضَ وَما بَينَهُما لـٰعِبينَ
Translation
We have not created the heavens and earth and all that is between them for amusement.

Verse 39
ما خَلَقنـٰهُما إِلّا بِالحَقِّ وَلـٰكِنَّ أَكثَرَهُم لا يَعلَمونَ
Translation
We have not created them except for a true purpose, but most of them do not know.

Verse 40
إِنَّ يَومَ الفَصلِ ميقـٰتُهُم أَجمَعينَ
Translation
Indeed, the Day of Judgment is the time appointed for them all,

يَومَ لا يُغنى مَولًى عَن مَولًى شَيـًٔا وَلا هُم يُنصَرونَ
Translation
the Day when no patron[1] will avail another in the least, nor will they be helped,

Verse 42
إِلّا مَن رَحِمَ اللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّهُ هُوَ العَزيزُ الرَّحيمُ
Translation
except those to whom Allah shows mercy. He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

Verse 43
إِنَّ شَجَرَتَ الزَّقّومِ
Translation
Indeed, the tree of Zaqqūm

طَعامُ الأَثيمِ
Translation
will be the food of the sinful,

كَالمُهلِ يَغلى فِى البُطونِ
Translation
like molten metal that will boil in their bellies

كَغَلىِ الحَميمِ
Translation
like the boiling of scalding water.

خُذوهُ فَاعتِلوهُ إِلىٰ سَواءِ الجَحيمِ
Translation
[It will be said], “Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Blazing Fire.

ثُمَّ صُبّوا فَوقَ رَأسِهِ مِن عَذابِ الحَميمِ
Translation
Then pour over his head the torment of scalding water.”

ذُق إِنَّكَ أَنتَ العَزيزُ الكَريمُ
Translation
“Taste this. You are surely the mighty and honorable![1]

[1] Abu Jahl, the chief of pagans in Makkah, replied to the warning of punishment in the Hereafter by saying, “How can I be punished when I am the mighty and honorable one!” So Allah killed him in the Battle of Badr and humiliated him, and revealed this verse. He will be taunted with these words in Hell as a reminder of his own words and additional torment.

Verse 50
إِنَّ هـٰذا ما كُنتُم بِهِ تَمتَرونَ
Translation
This is what you [all] used to doubt.”

إِنَّ المُتَّقينَ فى مَقامٍ أَمينٍ
Translation
Indeed, the righteous will be in a safe place,

فى جَنّـٰتٍ وَعُيونٍ
Translation
in gardens and springs,

يَلبَسونَ مِن سُندُسٍ وَإِستَبرَقٍ مُتَقـٰبِلينَ
Translation
wearing fine silk and heavy brocade, facing one another.

كَذٰلِكَ وَزَوَّجنـٰهُم بِحورٍ عينٍ
Translation
So it will be, and We will marry them to maidens with gorgeous eyes.

يَدعونَ فيها بِكُلِّ فـٰكِهَةٍ ءامِنينَ
Translation
They will call therein for every kind of fruit, safe and secure.

لا يَذوقونَ فيهَا المَوتَ إِلَّا المَوتَةَ الأولىٰ ۖ وَوَقىٰهُم عَذابَ الجَحيمِ
Translation
They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will protect them from the punishment of the Blazing Fire,

فَضلًا مِن رَبِّكَ ۚ ذٰلِكَ هُوَ الفَوزُ العَظيمُ
Translation
as a grace from your Lord. That is the supreme triumph.

فَإِنَّما يَسَّرنـٰهُ بِلِسانِكَ لَعَلَّهُم يَتَذَكَّرونَ
Translation
We have made this [Qur’an] easy in your own language, so that they may take heed.

فَارتَقِب إِنَّهُم مُرتَقِبونَ
Translation
Then wait; they too are waiting.
